The Desktop Pt-Co Colorimeter is a professional analytical instrument designed specifically for testing the color of water samples, widely used in various fields that require water quality color detection. It adopts the photoelectric colorimetric principle to accurately measure the color of water solutions, ensuring that the water quality meets the specified standards.

This instrument uses the platinum-cobalt color standard solution for calibration, with "PCU" (Platinum-Cobalt Unit) as the standard color measurement unit, which is the most commonly used unit for water color detection in the industry. It can accurately detect the color depth of various water samples, including tap water, industrial wastewater, drinking water, and beverage production water, providing reliable data support for water quality evaluation.

The Desktop Pt-Co Colorimeter has the advantages of compact structure, simple operation, and high detection accuracy. Its operation interface is intuitive, and the detection process is efficient - just add the water sample to the detection cell, and the instrument can quickly complete the color measurement and display the results in PCU units. It effectively avoids the subjective errors caused by manual color comparison, ensuring the accuracy and consistency of test results.

This instrument is widely applied in power plants, pure water plants, waterworks, and sewage treatment plants for daily color detection; it is also widely used in beverage factories, wine-making industries, pharmaceutical industries, environmental protection departments, epidemic prevention departments, and hospitals for water quality color testing. It helps relevant departments strictly control the water color index, ensure that the water quality meets the specified standards, and provide a reliable guarantee for production safety and environmental protection. It is an indispensable detection tool in water quality monitoring and industrial production.

Working Conditions

1. Working Environment Temperature: 5~35℃; Storage temperature: -20~55℃.

2. Relative Humidity of the working environment should not exceed 80%.

3. Power Supply: AC 220V 50Hz.

4. The instrument should be placed horizontally on a stable laboratory table, avoiding direct light sources as much as possible. Also, there should be no strong magnetic interference or strong vibration sources around.

5. There should be no obvious dust or corrosive gases in the surrounding air.

Operation and Use

  • There are two main ways to use a platinum‑cobalt colorimeter: the traditional visual method and the modern automatic instrument method.
  • The visual method follows a standard color comparison principle. It's straightforward but relies on human eyes.
  • The automatic method uses photoelectric detection. It's more automated and gives more objective, accurate results.

Standard Visual Color Comparison Method

Steps: sample collection and prep, side‑by‑side observation, matching, and reading.

Use a clear, transparent water sample. If it's turbid, centrifuge or filter it first.

Pour the sample into a sample tube up to the same mark as the standard tube.

Place both the sample tube and the standard color series tubes on a rack or in a color comparison box, side by side.

Look vertically down from the tube opening against a white background. Compare the color depth of the sample with the standards.

Find the standard tube that matches the sample most closely – its value is the sample's color. If it's between two standards, take the middle value.

Automatic Instrument Operation

General steps: warm‑up and calibration (if needed), sample prep, placing the cuvette, measurement, parameter setting, reading, and data handling.

Some instruments need to warm up first. Calibrate using a built‑in standard curve or standard solution.

For sample prep, put the water sample into a cuvette (e.g., 50 mm path length). Some instruments require a reagent and a color development step.

Place the cuvette into the measurement slot. On the touchscreen, select "Pt‑Co Color" mode. You can also set language, date, test item, and allowable error range on some models.

The instrument measures automatically and shows the color value. Some models use colors (green/red/amber) to quickly show if the result is within your preset error range.

Sample Requirements, Environment & Maintenance

The sample must be clear. Maximum particle size typically <100 µm; turbidity below 50 NTU to avoid interference. For true color (after removing suspended solids), filter the sample first.

Operating temperature: usually 0–40 °C or 5–35 °C. Keep away from direct sunlight and rain.

Regularly check calibration with standard solutions. Keep the cuvette clean.
