As a physical parameter, electrical conductivity is a physical quantity that measures a substance's ability to conduct electricity, reflecting the capacity of ions in a solution to carry electric current. When freely moving ions are present in a solution, they undergo directional migration under the influence of an electric field, thereby forming an electric current. The conductivity of water is correlated with the amount of inorganic acids, bases, and salts it contains. When their concentrations are low, conductivity increases with concentration. Therefore, this parameter is often used to infer the total ion concentration or salinity of water.
To test solutions of high or low conductive performance, choose electrodes with varied cell constants. Configure the system according to the mounted electrode, and the unit will automatically compute and present the final measured data.
To obtain reliable data, there are a few points to keep in mind when using the instrument:
Regular calibration: Calibrate the instrument with standard solutions - just like using standard weights to calibrate a scale - to ensure the accuracy of your measurement results.
Proper cleaning: Before and after each measurement, be sure to gently rinse the electrode with pure water and blot it dry with soft tissue paper, to avoid contaminating the sample or damaging the electrode.
Understanding the reading: The conductivity value itself is an aggregate indicator. It tells you the total amount of conductive substances in the water, but it cannot distinguish which specific ions are present. An unusually high reading typically suggests possible water contamination or high salinity.
