Humans cannot live without water, and the quality of drinking water is closely related to human health. With socio-economic development, scientific progress, and improved living standards, people's demands for drinking water quality are constantly increasing, and drinking water quality standards are correspondingly evolving and improving.

Because the formulation of drinking water quality standards is related to various factors such as people's living habits, culture, economic conditions, the level of scientific and technological development, water resources, and their current quality status, there are differences in drinking water quality requirements not only between countries but also between different regions within the same country. Water is the source of life. Drinking water safety is related to the health and safety of the people and must be given high priority and effectively guaranteed.

On the morning of June 28, 2012, the 27th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress held group discussions on the State Council's report on ensuring drinking water safety. The participating members offered many insightful suggestions on strengthening ecological protection and compensation for water sources, accelerating the construction and upgrading of water supply networks, refining water quality standards, improving water use efficiency, and ensuring the safety of drinking water for rural residents. Specific requirements were put forward regarding water quality testing and analysis.
